Observation and  sharp shooting posts

It was very important to observe movements of the enemy even during the artillery firing. Observation posts were built like covered constructions first using stone and later concrete. Interior of the posts vary, but they were quite small, approximately one or two square meters. There are two main types of posts. The floor of B-type is quadrangular. The C-type has quadrangular floor where the front wall is curved.

Observation posts have strong walls, so outside dimensions are much more bigger than the inside area. A concrete roof was very often strengthened with steel bars. Embrasure was very small. Sometimes 2 x 15 centimeters hole was cut to steel rail. Some posts have bigger embrasures for shooting  with rifle.

A small observation post is a very common construction in the land front. Small posts which were clearly designed for sharp shooting are quite rear. There are only four entire covered B-type posts left in the land front today. Two of those locate in the manor of Tuomarinkylä, object XV:1; other two are in Länsi-Pakila, object XVII:13. Entire covered C-type posts only five have survived: one in Mäkkylä XXVIII:8 and four in Toppelund, objects XXXIV:12 and 13.
